UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Related Human Rights Human Rights

Our program relates to the targets of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly goal 3, which relates to good health and wellbeing. 

The related Human Rights to this goal and applicable to our program are:

  • Right to life [UDHR art. 3; ICCPR art. 6], particularly of women [CEDAW art. 12] and children [CRC art.6]
  • Right to health [UDHR art. 25; ICESCR art. 12], particularly of women [CEDAW art. 12]; and children [CRC art.24]
  • Special protection for mothers and children [ICESCR art.10
  • International cooperation [UDHR art. 28, DRtD arts. 3-4], particularly in relation to the right to health and children’s rights [ICESCR art. 2(1); CRC art.

Our Commitments

Reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births

  • Support the provision of free maternal care at St Mary’s Hospital in Ethiopia to facilitate access to safe birthing services.

End preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age with all countries aiming to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1,000 live births and under-5 mortality to at least as low as 25 per 1,000 live births

  • Promote Apunipima’s Baby One Program and explore the translation of principles to our partners in Ethiopia and PNG;
  • Encourage Modilon Hospital’s efforts to reduce childhood malnutrition.

End the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases

  • Support capacity building of the health care team at Cabrini Ministries Swaziland;
  • Encourage sharing of experience between partners in Swaziland and PNG.

Achieve universal health coverage, including financial risk protection, access to quality essential health-care services and access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines

  • Provide operations funding to St Mary’s Hospital to assist in capacity building;
  • Work with acute care partners in Ethiopia and PNG to improve management, governance and standards of care;
  • Explore partnership with Catholic Health Services to improve access primary care in rural and remote communities in Madang Province.

Substantially increase health financing and the recruitment, development, training and retention of the health workforce in developing countries, especially in least developed countries and small island developing States

  • Assist in strengthening financial management systems at St Mary’s Hospital in Ethiopia;
  • Invite International Health Meeting participants to undertake a personal learning program while in Melbourne facilitated by a mentor;
  • Conduct an orthopaedic medical service and training program to Modilon Hospital
